Case study, run 28 October 2026
Do ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude recommend AI visibility tools?
We ran our own check on three AI visibility trackers: 27 buyer questions across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. The tools built to measure AI recommendations are rarely recommended themselves.
2 of 18
relevant answers named Otterly or Peec AI, both from Gemini
0 of 12
relevant answers from ChatGPT and Claude named any dedicated tracker
14 of 18
relevant answers named Semrush
“Relevant answers” are the 18 from the Otterly and Peec AI checks, whose questions were about AI search monitoring. The Profound check is reported separately below.

The questions
Our checker reads each homepage and writes three questions a buyer might ask, without the brand name. For Otterly:
- “What tools can I use to monitor where my brand appears in AI search results like ChatGPT and Perplexity?”
- “How can I track my website citations across AI-powered search engines?”
- “What software helps optimize my business for AI Overviews and AI search monitoring?”
Gemini’s answer to the first question was the only one of nine to name Otterly, in 7th place, after listing the assistants themselves and Profound. Peec AI’s one mention came the same way, in answer to a question about benchmarking AI search performance against competitors.
For Profound, the questions were about AI marketing agents and customer analytics, because that is how its homepage now describes the product. None of the 9 answers named Profound; they named analytics and CRM tools instead. That result reflects how Profound presents itself, not how well it is known for AI visibility tracking.
What this means for any business
1
Long-established names win by default
Semrush was named in 7 of 9 answers in both relevant scans, and Ahrefs in 5 and 6. Neither is mainly an AI visibility tracker. They have more than a decade of reviews, lists and articles behind them, and that is what assistants draw on.
2
New categories are close to invisible
ChatGPT and Claude named none of the dedicated AI visibility trackers in 12 relevant answers. If your product category is young, assistants may not know it exists yet, however good your site is.
3
Each assistant answers differently
Gemini was the only assistant to name dedicated trackers: Profound and Otterly in both of those answers, Peec AI in one, each listed after the AI assistants themselves. Checking one assistant tells you little about the others.
4
Your homepage decides which questions you’re judged on
Profound’s homepage now leads with marketing agents, so the questions written from it were about marketing analytics, where Mixpanel and HubSpot dominate. Say plainly what you do and for whom, or assistants will file you somewhere else.
Method and limits
- One check per tool, run on 28 October 2026: 3 questions, each sent once to ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
- Questions went through each provider’s official API to fast, low-cost models (gpt-5-mini and gpt-4.1-mini, gemini-3.6-flash and gemini-2.5-flash, claude-haiku-4-5), without web search. The ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude apps, especially with search switched on, can give different answers.
- A second AI pass extracted the brand names from each answer. We count a mention when the tool’s name appears in the answer.
- AI answers vary between runs. Nine answers per tool is a snapshot, not a ranking. Daily tracking across many questions gives a steadier picture.
- Seenrix may earn affiliate commission from some of the tools named here. That did not affect the questions, the answers or the counts.
